ABIA STATE ATTRACTS GLOBAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIPS AS HEALTH COMMISSIONER, PROF. UCHE REVEALS IMPRESSIVE MILESTONES IN STATE’S MEDICAL SECTOR

The Abia State Government has continued to gain international recognition and support from reputable global health institutions, thanks to the administration’s renewed commitment to revitalizing the healthcare sector under Governor Alex Chioma Otti.

Also, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, said that there is a high level of interest from global health organisations to partner with Abia State, adding that the operationalisation of the primary healthcare sectors has made that possible.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, alongside the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made this known while addressing journalists on Monday at the Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting.

Prof. Uche highlighted various achievements of the Abia State Government in the health sector, including meaningful collaborations with prominent foreign medical bodies.

“Recently, we partnered with PRO Health International. This is the second time we are doing that this year. 

“PRO Health International is the largest global health organisation we have in this country. It is an international global health group.

“During the last outreach in Amokwe Item, 3,463 patients received over 6,500 medical interventions. Over 115 free surgeries were carried out while 81 eye surgeries were performed. 

“In fact, one of the notable cases was a lady with fibroid that weighed 6kg with a nine-year history. She had a successful surgery.

“With the approval of Sahlgrenska University Hospital, the state is partnering with them to establish an ultra-modern stroke and neurovascular centre in Abia State. This was an endowment that was meant for a centre in Africa. With what is happening in Abia State, Abia was selected as that centre in Africa where this neurovascular stroke unit will be established,” Prof. Uche stated.

The Commissioner’s disclosure further underscores Governor Alex Otti’s unwavering drive to position Abia as a regional hub for advanced healthcare delivery and medical excellence. With these groundbreaking collaborations, Abia is rapidly emerging as a beacon of hope for quality and accessible healthcare, not just in Nigeri a but across Africa.
