The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Ambassador Richard Mills, has applauded the leadership style of the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, describing it as a model of good governance and a shining example for the Southeast region.

Ambassador Mills made this commendation during his courtesy visit to Governor Otti, where he noted that Abia’s reforms and the Governor’s pragmatic approach to governance had ushered in a new wave of progress and opportunities for the state.

According to Ambassador Mills, his visit was aimed at exploring the vast opportunities that Abia offers and identifying avenues for deepening collaboration between the United States and the state government. He emphasized that the American government and its private sector are keen on partnerships that foster mutual growth and prosperity.

“Your leadership in Abia has brought real change here, positive change. Your focus on infrastructure, on security challenges, has really transformed the state.

“And we believe that it is a powerful example of how to improve governance, really, across the Southeast.

“Let me also take a moment to just say how much the United States values its partnership with Abia and really with the entire Southeast region of Nigeria.

“There are tremendous opportunities here for our business, our commercial interests, and Nigeria’s. Your administration’s commitment to fostering economic growth, empowering youth, and creating a more transparent and more accountable government really aligns very closely with our goals and what U.S. business needs to see if it’s going to invest,” Ambassador Mills stated.

In his response, Governor Otti expressed gratitude to the U.S. envoy, describing the Ambassador’s presence as a strong mark of endorsement for his administration. The Governor reaffirmed Abia’s readiness to work closely with the United States in diverse sectors, while stressing the need for genuine partnerships rather than mere financial aid.

“We know that it is not all the time that the American Government visits a State. It’s a mark of endorsement as far as we are concerned here.

“In terms of partnership, like I was telling you, we don’t believe in grants and aid rather we seek partnership, believing that there is a lot of value that we can add working together.

“I think there are a lot of areas where you can be of help to us, and we can also be of help to America. This is probably the SME capital of Nigeria,” Governor Otti remarked.

Governor Otti also seized the opportunity to highlight his administration’s wide-ranging reforms in critical areas such as healthcare, education, waste management, Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SMEs), and digital technology. He emphasized that these initiatives were designed to reposition Abia as a hub for innovation, economic growth, and sustainable development.

The Governor expressed delight over the Ambassador’s 2-day working visit, which he described as further validation of Abia’s rising profile under his leadership.

The closed-door meeting was attended by key members of the State Executive Council and top aides of the Governor.
