IMPEACHMENT DRAMA IN RIVERS: GOV. FUBARA SHRUGS OFF ASSEMBLY MOVE, CALLS NOTICE A “LOVE LETTER,” VOWS UNWAVERING FOCUS ON GOVERNANCE AMID POLITICAL TENSION
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has played down the impeachment notice issued against him by the Rivers State House of Assembly, projecting calm and confidence as political tension continues to rise in the state.
The governor made his position clear while addressing a large crowd of supporters in Port Harcourt, shortly after members of the House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against him and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. His remarks, delivered in a relaxed and composed manner, immediately drew loud cheers and applause from the audience, reinforcing his message that he remains unperturbed by the unfolding political developments.
Earlier, it was reported that the Rivers State House of Assembly accused the governor’s administration of gross misconduct, a development that culminated in the formal issuance of an impeachment notice. The move has since ignited widespread political debate across Rivers State, sharply polarizing opinions between the executive arm of government and the legislature.
Despite a subsisting interim order from the Rivers State High Court restraining the lawmakers from proceeding further with the impeachment process, the Assembly announced on Friday that the Chief Judge of the state had received and acknowledged the notice served on the governor. This announcement further heightened political tensions and intensified public discourse on the legality and motivation behind the lawmakers’ actions.
Governor Fubara, however, dismissed the impeachment move as a mere distraction while speaking at the grand finale of the 2026 NPA Port Harcourt International Polo Tournament. He told supporters that although he had anticipated a smooth and productive year, political drama had instead taken centre stage.
“I thought 2026 would be the finest but they just landed me a love letter,” the governor said.
Reiterating his commitment to governance, Fubara emphasized that the impeachment threat would not derail his administration from delivering on its mandate to the people of Rivers State. He stressed that his government remains focused on stability, development, and inclusive progress, regardless of the political headwinds.
According to the governor, his administration will continue to work with and support individuals and institutions that genuinely desire the growth, peace, and prosperity of the state.
“But that, not withstanding, we must carry out our responsibility as government and we will continue to support everyone who means well for Rivers State,” he added.
As the impeachment process continues to generate controversy, Governor Fubara’s remarks signal a determination to remain focused on governance while allowing due process and the rule of law to tak
e their course.
