Federal High Court Ends Julius Abure’s Chairmanship, Directs INEC to Recognize Nenadi Usman–Led Caretaker Committee as Lawful Labour Party Leadership
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has reportedly affirmed the removal of Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), bringing renewed judicial clarity to the party’s protracted leadership crisis.
In its ruling, the court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Senator Nenadi Usman–led National Caretaker Committee as the lawful and legitimate leadership of the Labour Party.
Justice Lifu, who delivered the judgment on Wednesday in a related case, upheld the Nenadi Usman–led committee as the only valid and lawful leadership of the party. The court reaffirmed that Julius Abure’s tenure had already elapsed, in line with an earlier judgment of the Supreme Court.
The court held that, based on the Supreme Court’s position on the matter, Abure no longer had the legal standing to continue as national chairman of the party.
Consequently, it directed INEC to immediately recognize Senator Nenadi Usman as the leader of the Labour Party and to accord the National Caretaker Committee full recognition.
The ruling effectively settles the question of leadership legitimacy within the Labour Party, putting an end to competing claims and internal disputes that have trailed the party in recent months.
Political observers note that the judgment is expected to have significant implications for the party’s internal cohesion, administrative direction, and preparations for future political engagements, as INEC’s recognition is central to participation in electoral and statutory activities.
