Catholic Diocese of Umuahia Strengthens Abia’s Environmental Sanitation Drive with Donation of Two Brand-New Electric Street Sweeper and Scraper Vehicles to State Government
In a notable boost to environmental sanitation efforts in Abia State, the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia has donated two brand-new electric street sweeper and scraper vehicles to the Abia State Government, reinforcing ongoing initiatives to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more livable environment.
The donation, targeted at enhancing sanitation operations particularly within Umuahia, the state capital, reflects the enduring spirit of cooperation and mutual support between the Church and the Abia State Government. It also underscores the Diocese’s commitment to complementing public policies that directly impact the wellbeing of residents.
During the presentation ceremony, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong, commended the state government for its sustained dedication to environmental cleanliness. He acknowledged the visible efforts of the Governor and the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency in improving sanitation standards and fostering a healthier living environment across the state.
The Bishop emphasized the moral and social importance of cleanliness, noting that the Church considered it a responsibility to support initiatives that promote public health and environmental order. He described the gesture as a sincere contribution by the Diocese toward sustaining a clean and orderly Abia State, in line with shared values of responsibility and community service.
Following the presentation, the Bishop blessed the vehicles and formally handed over the keys to representatives of the state government. The event attracted officials and staff of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, as well as members of the clergy and laity of the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia, who gathered to witness and appreciate the significant gesture.
In his vote of thanks, the Deputy General Manager of ASEPA, Catechist Ambrose Johah, expressed profound appreciation to the Bishop and the Diocese for the timely intervention. He described the donation as exemplary and assured that the vehicles would be deployed efficiently and responsibly to further strengthen environmental sanitation across the state.
Also present at the brief but impactful ceremony were the Vicar-General of the Diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Chukwudi Anya; the Diocesan Financial Administrator, Rev. Fr. Tobias Ukeh; and the Cathedral Administrator, Rev. Fr. Anthony Etunwoke, alongside other clergy members who lent their support to the
initiative.
