Aba North Strengthens Grassroots Justice as Executive Mayor Timothy Iheke Receives Local Government Mediation and Conflict Resolution Panel, Inspects Fully Prepared Centre
Aba North Local Government Area has taken another decisive step towards promoting peace, justice, and social harmony at the grassroots, as the Executive Mayor, Hon. Timothy Kalu Iheke, received the Local Government Mediation and Conflict Resolution Panel in his office and conducted an inspection of the panel’s centre within the council.
The panel, led by its Chairman, Mrs. Ola Akpala (Rtd.), paid the visit to formally familiarize with the Executive Mayor and assess the readiness of the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Centre designated for Aba North. The visit underscored the growing institutional collaboration aimed at ensuring accessible, timely, and people-centered dispute resolution within communities under Aba North.
In welcoming the panel members, Hon. Iheke highlighted the strategic importance of the mediation panel in the local justice architecture, describing it as a critical alternative dispute resolution mechanism comparable in effectiveness to a magistrate court. He explained that the panel is designed to address disputes, particularly family-related and interpersonal conflicts in a manner that is less adversarial, more humane, and community-friendly.
The Executive Mayor noted that although participation in the mediation process is voluntary, outcomes agreed upon by the parties involved carry the weight and finality of judicial decisions, thereby reducing pressure on conventional courts and accelerating the delivery of justice. He further confirmed that the centre hall designated for the panel is fully ready for immediate use, expressing satisfaction with the level of preparedness.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, Hon. Iheke assured the panel of his unwavering support to ensure that its operations are effective, impactful, and beneficial to residents of Aba North. He emphasized that a peaceful society is fundamental to development and that proactive conflict resolution at the local level remains a priority of his leadership.
In her response, the Chairman of the panel, Mrs. Ola Akpala (Rtd.), expressed deep appreciation for the warm reception and the Mayor’s evident support. She commended his openness, leadership disposition, and commitment to peace-building, assuring that the panel would diligently discharge its responsibilities in line with its mandate to serve the people with integrity, fairness, and professionalism.
The establishment of the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Panel in Aba North forms part of a broader initiative by the Abia State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs under the Alex Otti-led administration, which had earlier set up and inaugurated similar panels across all 17 Local Government Areas in the state. Each panel operates from the respective Local Government Council Headquarters, bringing justice closer to the people.
The mediation centres are structured to provide a peaceful, confidential, cost-free, and timely platform for resolving disputes within communities. Issues handled by the panels include family and domestic disputes, land and boundary matters, community disagreements, tenancy and landlord issues, as well as minor commercial and interpersonal conflicts.
The mediation process is free of charge, voluntary in nature, strictly confidential, and significantly faster than conventional litigation, making it an attractive and people-focused alternative for dispute resolution.
