Peter Obi Blasts Electoral Standards, Cites U.S. Comment on Nigeria’s Image Amid Tinubu Certificate Controversy
Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has stirred fresh political debate after declaring that Nigeria’s global image has been damaged by what he described as a failure to uphold integrity in leadership qualification processes.
Speaking during his official declaration for the ADC presidential ticket in Akwa Ibom on Saturday, Obi made pointed remarks about standards of accountability in Nigeria’s electoral system, drawing comparisons with other countries and referencing comments allegedly made by Donald Trump concerning Nigeria’s reputation.
Obi, in a direct swipe at Bola Tinubu, alluded to lingering controversies surrounding the president’s academic records, particularly issues connected to Chicago State University.
“I went to Indonesia and asked their election organisers about the qualification to be president. They said if someone forged their qualification, they would be jailed.
“Here, they treat it as a pre-election matter. Someone forges a certificate or doesn’t have one it’s allowed. That’s why the American president called Nigeria a ‘disgraced country,’” Obi said.
The comments come against the backdrop of the protracted legal and political battle over Tinubu’s academic credentials. During the 2023 post-election litigation, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar sought court approval to subpoena Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University, citing alleged discrepancies in publicly available documents.
Tinubu, however, moved to block the release of additional records, while Nigeria’s apex court ultimately dismissed fresh evidence presented in the matter. The Supreme Court ruling reaffirmed Tinubu’s 2023 electoral victory, effectively bringing the legal contest to a close, though public discourse around the issue has persisted.
Attempts to get an immediate response from Tinubu’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Obi’s latest remarks have once again reignited conversations about electoral integrity, qualification standards for public office, and the broader implications of political controversies on Nigeria’s international standing. As political realignments gather momentum ahead of future elections, the debate over credibility, transparency, and leadership ethics continues to shape the national discourse.
