ABSU Management Dismisses Sahara Reporters’ Extortion Allegations, Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance for Corruption
The Management of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has reacted to a publication by Sahara Reporters dated April 1, 2026, which alleged that some lecturers in the Mass Communication and Engineering Departments were extorting students in exchange for favorable examination outcomes.
In an official statement issued by the University’s Directorate of Public Relations, the institution expressed concern over the report, noting that while it would not engage in a media dispute, it expected a credible news platform to provide verifiable evidence capable of identifying those allegedly involved, rather than relying on unsubstantiated claims.
The University emphasized that under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, ABSU has maintained a firm stance against corruption and related misconduct. The administration, according to the statement, operates a strict zero-tolerance policy on extortion, examination malpractice, and other unethical practices, with sanctions consistently applied to any staff found culpable after due investigation.
Management described the publication as an attempt to tarnish the image of the institution and Abia State, particularly in the aftermath of a successful Convocation ceremony that received widespread commendation. It further suggested that such reports may be driven by ulterior motives aimed at discrediting the University and its achievements.
Despite its reservations about the report, the University reiterated its commitment to strengthening internal mechanisms across all departments to detect, investigate, and punish any form of misconduct involving staff or students.
Students were also encouraged to report any incidents of extortion or related unethical behavior to the appropriate authorities within the institution. The Management assured that all reports would be treated with strict confidentiality, while whistleblowers would be protected and rewarded accordingly.
The statement was signed by the Director of Public Relations, Chijoke Nwogu.
