Labour Party Unveils Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as Consensus Presidential Candidate for 2027 Election
The Labour Party has officially announced Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, marking a significant political development as preparations for the next electoral cycle begin to gather momentum across Nigeria.
The emergence of Dr. Okereke followed a broad-based agreement among party leaders, stakeholders and members, a decision that was affirmed in Abuja on May 30, 2026. The party is among the political platforms that have zoned their presidential ticket to the Southern region of the country ahead of the highly anticipated contest.
Dr. Okereke enters the presidential race with a strong reputation in governance, legislative development, public policy and institutional reforms. Over the years, he has positioned himself as one of Nigeria’s respected voices in public administration, democratic governance and policy advocacy.
He currently serves as the President of ERGAF-AFRICA Legislative Governance Innovation and Policy Hub, a research-driven institution focused on policy innovation, legislative reforms and governance development.
In addition, he has worked closely with key committees and ranking lawmakers in the National Assembly as a legislative consultant, contributing to lawmaking, oversight and policy formulation processes.
Beyond legislative practice, Dr. Okereke has played a major role in academia and leadership development. He is a resident lecturer in the Department of Public Policy and Administration at Miva Open University, where he contributes to the training and mentorship of emerging public sector leaders and policy professionals.
His academic credentials further underline his profile as a scholar and governance strategist. Dr. Okereke holds a PhD in Legislative Governance Studies alongside master’s degrees in Public Administration and Legislative Studies, both obtained with distinction honours. He is also currently a Doctorate Candidate in Public Policy at Veritas University.
Before attaining national prominence, he graduated from University of Nigeria with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, specialising in Public Sector Audit and Investigation. During his time at the institution, he rose to become the Golden Jubilee Student Union President, a position that strengthened his reputation as a youth-oriented leader and advocate for transformational governance.
Dr. Okereke also earned a Master of Science degree with Distinction Honours in Legislative and Democratic Studies from the University of Benin/NILDS and another Master’s degree in Political Science and Public Administration from Baze University, equally with distinction honours.
Widely known for his passion for democratic reforms and active citizenship, the Labour Party candidate founded several initiatives aimed at promoting social re-engineering, youth empowerment and leadership transformation in Nigeria. These include Erudite Growth and Advancement Foundation (ErGAF-AFRICA), Project Hope Alive Africa and the National Political Equity Movement (N-PEM Nigeria). He also co-convenes the National Legislative Conference in Nigeria.
Through the Project Hope Alive Initiative, more than 2,000 school children across communities have reportedly benefited from educational interventions and support materials, reflecting his commitment to grassroots development and educational advancement.
Dr. Okereke is also recognised for his extensive involvement in professional and policy institutions. He is a member of the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, the Nigeria Institute of Management and the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners. He has equally obtained several executive certifications in leadership, diplomacy, public policy and governance studies.
Within the National Assembly ecosystem, he has served in multiple strategic capacities, providing technical support for legislative committees and lawmakers in the areas of representation, lawmaking and oversight functions. He has also coordinated parliamentary engagements linked to international organisations, including the International Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, the Nigeria Parliamentary Israel Allies Caucus and Parliamentarians for Global Action.
Over the years, Dr. Okereke has remained a familiar face on major national television platforms, where he regularly appears as a public affairs and policy analyst discussing governance, accountability and national development issues.
In recognition of his academic excellence and contributions to legislative studies, he was honoured in 2018 with the 8th President of Senate Endowment Award as the Best Graduating Student in Legislative Studies.
With the Labour Party now presenting him as its consensus flagbearer, political observers are expected to closely watch how his policy-driven profile, legislative background and governance advocacy shape the political conversation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
