Abia State Assembly Advances Bill to Reposition State University, ABSU as Single-Campus Institution
The Abia State House of Assembly has advanced efforts to reform the administration and structure of the Abia State University (ABSU) following the passage of the Abia State University (Amendment) Bill, 2026 for second reading during plenary.
The Bill, H.A.B 6, sponsored by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu, representing Arochukwu State Constituency, seeks to amend Section 3 of Law No. 5 of 1995, which established the university, and repeal the Abia State University Law (Amendment No. 1) of 2009.
Leading the debate on the proposed legislation, Hon. Okoro explained that the amendment is designed to provide the legal framework for Abia State University to operate a single-campus system within the state.
According to him, the proposed reform will enhance the institution’s efficiency, strengthen its administration, and position it to better serve the educational needs of Abians and the wider student population.
The lawmaker noted that the restructuring initiative is aimed at creating a more effective and streamlined university system capable of delivering improved academic and administrative outcomes.
Following extensive deliberations by members, the House unanimously passed the Bill for second reading and subsequently committed it to the Committee of the Whole for further legislative consideration and scrutiny.
The development marks another significant step in the ongoing efforts of the Abia State House of Assembly to strengthen educational institutions through legislative reforms geared towards improving governance, service delivery, and academic excellence across the state.
