Nigeria Ranks Fourth Globally in Daily Death Count as China, India Lead Worldwide
Nigeria has been ranked the fourth country in the world with the highest estimated daily death count, according to figures released in the latest report by WPS, highlighting the country’s significant mortality burden when compared with other nations.
The report estimates that about 7,613 people die every day in Nigeria, translating to an average of 317 deaths every hour. The figures place Nigeria behind only China, India, and the United States in terms of the number of deaths recorded daily.
China tops the global ranking with an estimated 31,436 deaths per day, averaging 1,310 deaths every hour, while India follows with 27,073 daily deaths or approximately 1,128 deaths per hour. The United States occupies the third position with 8,586 deaths each day, equivalent to 358 deaths per hour.
Nigeria’s fourth-place ranking places it ahead of several highly populated and industrialized countries, including Indonesia, Russia, Pakistan, Brazil, Japan, and Germany.
According to the report, Indonesia records an estimated 6,153 deaths daily, followed by Russia with 5,115, Pakistan with 4,556, Brazil with 4,288, Japan with 4,280, and Germany with 2,854 deaths per day.
The report further notes that China’s estimated daily and hourly death counts are nearly five times higher than Nigeria’s, reflecting the impact of its much larger population.
While the figures represent total mortality across all causes rather than deaths from any specific disease or disaster, they underscore the scale of population dynamics and public health challenges facing some of the world’s most populous nations.
Nigeria’s position among the top five countries in global daily mortality also reflects its large population, demographic structure, and the continued need for investments in healthcare, disease prevention, maternal and child health, road safety, and other measures aimed at improving life expectancy and reducing preventable deaths.
