Abia Sets September 7–12 Orientation for Newly Recruited Teachers, Unveils Digital and Modern Teaching Focus
The Abia State Government has announced a mandatory five-day orientation programme for newly recruited teachers across the state, as part of efforts to prepare them for effective service delivery and modern teaching practices.
The programme is scheduled to run from September 7 to 12, 2026, and will provide the new teachers with the knowledge, skills and professional orientation required to excel in Abia’s public education system.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, August 31, 2026, while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Ott, OFR.
According to the Commissioner, the orientation programme will take place at two designated centres: Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, and Federal Government Girls’ College, Umuahia.
Participants will be required to select their preferred training venue through the Ministry of Basic Education’s online portal, allowing the government to properly organise and coordinate the programme across the two locations.
The orientation is designed to go beyond the traditional introduction to teaching, with a strong emphasis on professionalism, innovation and the changing demands of education in the modern era.
Kanu explained that the new teachers would be introduced to the responsibilities and expectations of public and civil servants, while also gaining a deeper understanding of the vision and strategic direction of education under the Governor Alex Otti administration.
A major component of the programme will be the adoption of modern, learner-centred teaching methods aimed at making classroom instruction more engaging, practical and responsive to the needs of students.
The teachers will also undergo training in digital literacy and classroom technology, equipping them with skills needed to integrate technology into everyday teaching and learning.
Other areas of focus will include data-driven teaching tools, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics methodologies, as well as vocational alignment.
Experts drawn from the various fields are expected to serve as resource persons during the programme, bringing specialised knowledge and practical experience to the training sessions.
The initiative underscores the Abia State Government’s broader focus on strengthening the education sector by investing not only in school infrastructure and learning facilities, but also in the capacity and professional development of teachers who remain central to the success of the education system.
