Abia State Government Advances Road Maintenance, Completes Key Projects Despite Heavy Rains
The Abia State Government has continued to sustain its infrastructure maintenance efforts across the state, with direct-labour maintenance works carried out at 43 locations during the period under review.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, August 31, 2026, while briefing pressmen at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, two projects were completed during the period, while no new project was added to the existing maintenance schedule.
Among the completed interventions was the rainy-season maintenance of the 5.2-kilometre Umuehim-Okpuala Ngwa Road, an important road corridor linking communities across Isiala Ngwa North and Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Areas.
The government also completed maintenance works on the 250-metre access road leading to the Chima Ubani Memorial Hospital at the Obingwa Local Government Headquarters, improving access to the healthcare facility and surrounding areas.
Despite the progress recorded, Kanu disclosed that 26 road projects remained under contract across the state. He explained that construction activities had slowed considerably at several project sites as a result of the heavier rains experienced during the current season.
However, the slowdown has not brought infrastructure monitoring to a halt. Survey and inspection activities are continuing at various project locations to ensure that construction works remain within approved specifications, with accurate levels and alignments maintained.
The development underscores the state government’s continued focus on sustaining existing infrastructure while advancing ongoing road projects, even as weather conditions pose challenges to construction activities.
The government is expected to continue monitoring the projects to ensure that work progresses in line with approved standards and that completed infrastructure remains functional and accessible to residents a
cross the state.
