NCHEDO Records Eight Sexual, Gender-Based Violence Cases in Abia, Supports Survivors
Abia State’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre, NCHEDO, recorded eight cases of sexual and gender-based violence during the period under review, with survivors ranging in age from four to 25 years.
The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, on Monday, August 31, 2026, while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, the reported incidents involved alleged abuse by neighbours, landlords, family members and, in one case, an employer. He noted that some of the younger survivors were allegedly subjected to repeated assaults by the same perpetrator, highlighting the vulnerability of children and young people to sexual and gender-based violence.
Kanu explained that NCHEDO responded to the cases by providing survivors with medical attention, psychosocial support and legal assistance as part of efforts to help them recover from the trauma and pursue justice.
He further disclosed that the Centre was working closely with relevant law enforcement agencies to facilitate investigations and ensure that those responsible for the alleged offences were brought to justice.
