“I Was Ashamed of My Country! I Came to Remove Some of the Shame” — NAFDAC DG Rejects Resignation Calls, Laughs Hysterically After Journalist Says Nigerians Want Her To Resign Over Fake Products In Circulation
The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has dismissed calls for her resignation, insisting that her return to Nigeria after 34 years in the United States was driven by a desire to serve the country and help improve its international image.
Adeyeye spoke amid growing criticisms surrounding NAFDAC and her leadership of the agency, with allegations and questions being raised over the agency’s activities and dealings with contractors.
The NAFDAC boss, however, maintained that she has no regrets about returning to Nigeria after retiring from what she described as a successful and fulfilling academic career in the United States.
According to her, she had built a comfortable life and enjoyed a rewarding career abroad but chose to return home because of her concerns about Nigeria’s reputation internationally and her desire to contribute her knowledge and experience to the country.
Adeyeye explained that her decision to return was not motivated by financial considerations or personal gain, but by a sense of responsibility and a desire to make a difference.
She said she was deeply concerned about the perception of Nigeria while she was living abroad and felt compelled to come back and contribute to efforts aimed at changing that narrative.
The NAFDAC Director-General also strongly challenged allegations that she had demanded money from contractors working with the agency.
She called on anyone making such claims to come forward publicly and provide evidence, stressing that she was prepared to face anyone who could substantiate the allegations against her.
Adeyeye insisted that her return to Nigeria was primarily about national service and not an opportunity to enrich herself.
She further defended her decision to remain in office despite the criticisms, maintaining that the work being carried out by NAFDAC was producing results that were increasingly attracting international attention.
According to her, the progress being recorded by the agency was part of the reason she remained convinced that her decision to return to Nigeria had been worthwhile.
Speaking passionately about her motivation for coming back home, Adeyeye said she had been uncomfortable with Nigeria’s image while living in the United States and wanted to play a role in correcting some of the negative perceptions associated with the country.
“Any contractor that I have demanded money from should come here and tell me! I came here for service. I retired happily. I was ashamed of my country! I came to remove some of the shame. And the world is seeing it! The world is seeing it!,“ she said.
