Abia to Mark 2026 World Sight Day at Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal, Focus on Drivers’ Eye Health
The Abia State Government has announced plans to commemorate the 2026 World Sight Day on Thursday, October 15, with activities scheduled to take place at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, as part of efforts to promote eye health and improve road safety across the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, October 12, 2026, at Government House, Umuahia, while briefing pressmen on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu explained that the decision to host this year’s commemoration at the bus terminal was deliberate, given the critical role drivers play in ensuring the safety of passengers and other road users.
The initiative will focus on raising awareness about the importance of regular eye examinations, early detection of vision problems, and proper eye care among commercial drivers and other road users.
The government’s focus on drivers underscores the importance of good eyesight in preventing road accidents, improving driving performance, and protecting the lives of commuters and pedestrians.
Through the commemoration, the Abia State Government seeks to strengthen public awareness of vision care and encourage drivers to prioritise their eye health as an essential part of responsible driving.
The 2026 World Sight Day activities form part of the state government’s broader public health awareness efforts, highlighting the connection between healthy vision, safer roads, and the protection of
human lives.
