Abia Handball Team Secures Ticket to National Division One Championship in Abuja
Abia State’s growing investment in sports development is beginning to yield encouraging results, as the state’s handball team has secured qualification for the National Handball Division One Championship scheduled to take place in Abuja.
The achievement follows the team’s impressive performance at the South-East handball competition, where it demonstrated its competitive strength and earned a place at the national championship.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, October 12, 2026, at Government House, Umuahia, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu noted that the latest achievement reflects the positive impact of the Abia State Government’s sustained investments in sports development and its commitment to creating opportunities for athletes to showcase their talents and compete at higher levels.
The qualification marks another encouraging milestone for Abia’s sporting community, offering the state’s handball players an opportunity to compete against their counterparts from across the country and further establish Abia as a force to reckon with in Nigerian sports.
With the National Handball Division One Championship ahead, expectations are high that the Abia team will build on its South-East performance, represent the state with distinction, and continue to bring pride to the New Abia agenda under Governor Alex Otti’s admini
stration.
