Gov. Otti Expands Abia Smart Schools Initiative to 21, Promises Higher Standards in Public and Private Schools

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has announced plans to commission another smart school in the state, while disclosing that the number of smart schools planned under his administration has increased to 21 following the approval of an additional facility.
The expansion underscores the Otti administration’s commitment to transforming the education sector through modern learning infrastructure, improved teaching standards and the creation of an enabling environment where students can access quality education regardless of their background.
Governor Otti made the disclosure on Friday, October 30, 2026, during the October edition of his monthly media chat, “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” where he addressed questions on the state government’s educational reforms and efforts to improve learning outcomes across public and private schools.
Speaking on the need to strengthen educational standards across the state, the Governor assured that his administration would pursue the standardisation of education in both public and private schools, stressing the importance of maintaining quality and encouraging healthy competition within the sector.
He explained that more than two years ago, his government constituted a committee to examine its interventions in the education sector, particularly their implications for private schools and the need to establish a sustainable balance that would promote quality education across both categories of institutions.
According to the Governor, the committee had completed its assignment and submitted its report, which has since been considered by the government.
The approved position is that sustained improvements in public schools should serve as a catalyst for positive competition, compelling private school operators to strengthen their facilities, improve teaching standards and deliver better educational outcomes to remain competitive.
The approach reflects the administration’s broader vision of repositioning education as a critical instrument for human capital development, social mobility and the long-term prosperity of Abia State.
With the expansion of the smart schools programme to 21 facilities, the Otti administration is deepening its investment in modern educational infrastructure while pursuing reforms designed to raise standards across the entire education system.
The government’s strategy signals a shift towards an education environment in which public schools are strengthened to provide quality learning opportunities, while private schools are encouraged to continuously improve their services in response to rising standards.
For Abia, the ultimate objective is to build an education system that places students at the centre of policy, promotes excellence and equips the next generation with the knowledge and skills required to compete in an increasingly technology-driven world.
