On Monday, October 5, 2026, Governor Alex Otti made a donation of ₦1 billion to teachers in Abia State for the celebration of the 2026 Teachers’ Day. It was an unprecedented gesture that expectedly reverberated across the State, especially amongst teachers and their friends. I was especially happy with our dear Governor for this gesture for a number of reasons: one, the thoughtfulness to appreciate that our teachers deserve some real smile on their special day; the second is the knowledge that the payment will certainly hit the beneficiaries’ bank accounts because the Governor understands the weight of his promise and you can already take it for granted that the teachers will receive what was promised. Then the wisdom to pay directly and not through intermediaries was a masterstroke, everybody gets what is due them right in their accounts, no administrative charges or logistics fees.

Beyond the introduction of the “Teachers’ Appreciation Allowance” by His Excellency, there were about 3 other significant announcements that made my day: the first is the revelation of the plan by the administration to open a pathway for overseas training for hardworking teachers in our public schools. The thought of sending our teachers to other parts of the world to interact with their peers and learn new insights on pedagogy is heartwarming, but I am more excited by the fact that this is coming at a time when many brilliant young minds in the State are taking to the teaching profession; the implication is that the culture of hard work would be entrenched as a new layer of incentive, career-boosting training opportunities in different parts of the world, has been introduced to reward those who prove themselves worthy. The other interesting development is the announcement by the Governor that the Chief Information Officer had been directed to evaluate the cost of acquiring smart devices to support research, collaboration and other functions for the teachers. This is something that should excite everyone of us interested in public education in the State because our teachers would, according to the plan, be provided with the digital tools to function more effectively, update their knowledge and share ideas with peers. Kudos, Your Excellency for the brilliance of this initiative. Lastly, the Governor also directed that all issues of underpayment or omission of staff on the payroll be addressed without further delays. He actually gave the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education a timeline to report progress on this. Yes, I almost forgot, Dr Otti also made a clear pronouncement on promotion and outstanding leave allowance for teachers, assuring that the matter is already receiving attention and would be resolved in no time; as someone who understands his enduring commitment to the welfare of our hardworking teachers, I can assure right away that all issues related to promotion and leave allowances would be concluded in no time.

After carefully reading His Excellency’s bold address to our great teachers on their special day, I picked 5 important lessons I would now share with all of us:

1. There is enough to meet everyone’s need but never enough for anyone’s greed: Governor Alex Otti demonstrates that a lot can be achieved when stealing and other forms of corruption are drastically reduced. The N1 billion for teachers’ appreciation allowance could have gone into the private bank account of one “critical stakeholder” before now, it could have been used to drink Paradis somewhere or wired to an overseas account for “rainy days. Under Governor Otti, however, every penny is committed to working for the people so it is often easy to find some cash somewhere to do a good deed here and there. Thank you, dear Governor for very specially remembering our good teachers. Congratulations to our teachers. Remember, it could get better in the future, keep doing your job with dedication and commitment.

2. Building capacity is the key to the transformation of the education sector and the Governor appreciates this so well. Yes, it would be great to have our teachers train with, and learn from their colleagues in some other parts of the world on how to improve their outputs, and ultimately raise quality champions for our public school system. I look forward to learning the modalities for selection but I am impressed that His Excellency had made it clear that, as always, everything would be driven by merit. Who knows, a few more persons I know may start hustling for teaching appointment because when a job here in Abia can take you round the world for training and capacity development, where else would you want to be?

3. Abia’s golden age is arriving: Yes, teachers shape the social character of the society as His Excellency rightly pointed, therefore, with an improved welfare package, teachers in the State would definitely go the extra mile to raise world beaters who would go on to build our communities into places of pride for us and those coming after.

4. Teaching would now be rewarded on earth and in heaven: Yes, we were told in the past that the only place teachers would be rewarded is in heaven, after their earthly journey. Governor Otti has also added earth to the mix so while the heavenly reward remains assured, he has ensured that while they do their work here, they will have something to smile about. Good thought sir.

5. The era of mocking teachers and the teaching career is over: Monday was a watershed moment for Abia teachers, the Governor made it clear that the welfare of teachers would now move to the front burner so those who mocked and derided teachers in the past would now be forced to eat their words; to be clear, Governor Otti is not proposing to put teachers on the same income category as our friend at Tesla, Mr Elon Musk, but going forward, teachers who work hard would receive decent reward from the State Government and this would come in the form of financial benefits, training opportunities and a whole lot more. My projection is that more young men and women would now begin to look to teaching as a rewarding and fulfilling career path.
