WORLD TOURISM DAY 2027: Harnessing Tourism for Sustainable Transformation in Aba North and Abia State

Today, September 27, we join the global community in celebrating World Tourism Day 2025, under the inspiring theme: “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.” This theme resonates deeply with our aspirations in Aba North and indeed across Abia State, as we continue to chart a new course under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR.

Tourism is no longer seen as a pastime; it is a catalyst for economic growth, cultural preservation, and social transformation. Around the world, nations are unlocking the wealth of tourism to create jobs, expand opportunities, and promote sustainable development. In Aba North, we are determined not to be left behind.

Under Governor Alex Otti’s administration, Abia State is embracing a holistic approach to tourism development, one that integrates our rich cultural heritage, entrepreneurial spirit, and unique geographical advantages. Aba, the commercial heartbeat of the Southeast, is not only a hub for innovation and trade but also a city with untapped tourism potential that can drive sustainable transformation for our people.

As a local government, we are working in alignment with the state’s agenda to position Aba North as a center for cultural tourism, heritage preservation, and creative industry growth. We recognize that our festivals, historical monuments, arts, crafts, and hospitality sector are valuable assets that must be nurtured and projected to the world.

Recently, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) expressed strong interest in collaborating with Abia State to promote cultural heritage and create sustainable tourism models. This partnership is timely and strategic. It presents Aba North with the opportunity to showcase our historic sites, museums, and indigenous craftsmanship while creating an ecosystem that empowers local artisans, boosts small businesses, and enhances community pride.

Governor Alex Otti’s administration has also prioritized infrastructure renewal, roads, security, and urban renewal, which are critical foundations for tourism growth. By making our environment clean, safe, and accessible, we are creating the enabling conditions for investors, visitors, and cultural enthusiasts to experience Abia as a true destination of choice.

On this World Tourism Day, I reaffirm our commitment in Aba North to leverage tourism as a tool for job creation, youth empowerment, cultural renaissance, and economic sustainability. With the right policies, partnerships, and the unwavering support of the Alex Otti administration, we are confident that tourism will become a transformative engine for Aba North, Abia State, and Nigeria at large.
