Tragedy in Paris as South African Ambassador to France, Emmanuel Nkosinathi Mthethwa, Found Dead After Fall from 22nd Floor Hotel Room
Paris authorities have confirmed the tragic death of Emmanuel Nkosinathi Mthethwa, South Africa’s ambassador to France, who was discovered lifeless near the Hyatt Hotel at Porte Maillot, close to the South African Embassy in Paris.
The 58-year-old diplomat was reported missing on Monday after his wife alerted French authorities upon receiving a disturbing message from him in the evening. Concerned about his safety, the Paris prosecutor’s office said a search was immediately launched, with officers combing the woods in western Paris.
On Tuesday, the search ended in tragedy when Mthethwa’s body was found outside the hotel, where investigators believe he fell from his 22nd-floor room. Although an inquiry is ongoing, early indications point toward the likelihood of suicide, French sources revealed.
Mthethwa, who was appointed as South Africa’s ambassador to France in February 2024, also held the role of South Africa’s permanent delegate to UNESCO. His death marks a sudden and painful end to a decades-long political and diplomatic career that had seen him play significant roles in advancing his country’s interests on the global stage.
The South African government is yet to issue an official statement, but the news has sent shockwaves through diplomatic and political circles both in Paris and Pretoria.
