President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, one of the most influential and longest-serving leaders in modern global politics, turns 73 today, October 7, 2025. Born on October 7, 1952, in Leningrad now St. Petersburg. Putin’s life story is interwoven with Russia’s transformation over the past seven decades.

His early education began at a local secondary school in Leningrad, where he displayed a keen interest in academics and discipline. In 1965, he transitioned to a specialised secondary school with an advanced focus on chemistry, a move that reflected his early dedication to intellectual development. Later, he gained admission to the Faculty of Law at Leningrad State University, named after A. A. Zhdanov, which is now known as St. Petersburg State University.

Putin’s political journey to the summit of Russian leadership began at the turn of the millennium. On December 31, 1999, he assumed office as Acting President of Russia following Boris Yeltsin’s resignation. A few months later, on March 26, 2000, he was elected as the Head of State through a nationwide vote.

Since then, Putin has been re-elected multiple times, in 2004, 2012, 2018, and 2024 cementing his position as one of the most enduring figures in Russian political history. Between 2008 and 2012, during Dmitry Medvedev’s presidency, Putin served as Chairman of the Government, maintaining a firm grip on national policy and direction.

Under his leadership, Russia has played host to several landmark global events, including the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, both of which showcased the country’s infrastructure, culture, and global reach. Additionally, the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and the Eastern Economic Forum, held annually, have evolved into major global platforms for international dialogue, trade, and investment cooperation.

Putin’s era has also seen Russia take an active role in shaping international alliances and regional economic frameworks. The creation of BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) marked a strategic shift toward multipolar global influence and economic integration, reinforcing Russia’s position as a key player on the world stage.

As the Russian leader celebrates his 73rd birthday, world leaders from across the globe continue to extend their congratulations, acknowledging his political resilience, global impact, and enduring leadership.

Vladimir Putin’s life remains emblematic of Russia’s evolving identity from post-Soviet recovery to a renewed assertion of global power under his watch.
