Israel Conducts Targeted Strike in Gaza, Killing Senior Hamas Commander, Raed Saad Amid Rising Tensions
Israel carried out a precision strike on Saturday in Gaza City that killed Raed Saad, a senior commander in Hamas’s military wing, the Qassam Brigades, in a significant escalation of its ongoing operations in the region. Saad, who led weapons production for the Qassam Brigades, was considered one of the most prominent figures responsible for planning and executing attacks against Israeli targets.
The strike, conducted on a vehicle inside Gaza, also claimed the lives of three others, according to Hamas authorities. Multiple civilians in the vicinity were reported injured during the blast, reflecting the continuing civilian toll in the conflict.
Saad had played a central role during the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attacks on Israeli communities east of Gaza City and had long been on Israel’s most-wanted list. Israeli military sources highlighted that he was directly responsible for numerous Israeli casualties over the years and had survived multiple previous attempts on his life, including a high-profile raid in Gaza City in March 2024 when he narrowly escaped capture.
Saturday’s strike took place on the Palestinian-controlled side of the so-called Yellow Line, the fragile boundary dividing Gaza since the US-mediated ceasefire in October 2025. Israeli forces maintain control over the eastern sector of Gaza, covering just over half of the territory.
Raed Saad was reportedly part of a newly formed five-member military leadership council established by Hamas following the October ceasefire, underscoring his strategic importance to the group’s operations. His death marks a major development in the ongoing Israeli campaign against Hamas leadership.
The conflict traces back to the October 2023 Hamas offensive that left over 1,200 Israelis dead and more than 250 taken hostage. While all hostages have been returned except the remains of one police officer, the humanitarian toll in Gaza has been staggering, with the Hamas-run health ministry reporting over 70,000 Palestinian fatalities as a result of Israeli military actions.
Diplomatic efforts are now focusing on the next stage of the US-brokered peace plan, which calls for the disarmament of Hamas and the redevelopment of Gaza as part of a broader de-radicalization strategy. Saad’s death is likely to intensify both the military and political dynamics in the region, potentially shaping the trajectory of Israeli-Hamas relations in the co
ming months.
