Abia Earns National Commendation, Attract National Applause as Reps Committee Rates State Excellent in Primary Healthcare and Universal Coverage
Abia State has recorded another major milestone in its ongoing health sector reforms, earning an excellent rating from the House of Representatives Committee on Health following an oversight visit that assessed the state’s performance in primary healthcare delivery and universal health coverage.
The positive development was made known by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, while briefing journalists on the outcomes of the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting held on Tuesday and presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to Prince Kanu, the federal lawmakers expressed satisfaction with the level of progress recorded across key health indicators in Abia, noting that the state’s renewed focus on strengthening primary healthcare facilities, improving access to essential services, and expanding health insurance coverage is yielding measurable results.
He explained that the commendation reflects the impact of the present administration’s deliberate investments in the health sector, particularly its commitment to building a functional, accessible, and people-centered healthcare system that prioritizes preventive care and grassroots service delivery.
Providing further insight into ongoing public health interventions, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, used the opportunity to call on parents and guardians to ensure that children between the ages of nine months and fourteen years are presented for the Measles and Rubella vaccination.
Professor Uche emphasized that the vaccine is safe, effective, and life-saving, stressing that immunization remains one of the most reliable ways to protect children from preventable diseases that can lead to serious complications or death.
He added that the state government is intensifying its immunization campaigns to achieve wider coverage and safeguard the health of children across all communities.
The strong commendation from the House Committee and the renewed push for childhood immunization underscore Abia State’s steady march toward a resilient health system, anchored on quality service delivery, disease prevention, and universal access under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti.
