ABIA STATE GOVT ADVANCES UMUAHIA RAIL PROJECT, FINALIZES PLANS FOR MODERN TRAIN STATION, INTEGRATED TRANSPORT HUB AND ECONOMIC CORRIDOR
The Abia State Government has taken a significant step toward redefining transportation infrastructure in the state, as the proposed Umuahia railway project gains momentum following high-level deliberations at this week’s State Executive Council meeting.
Briefing journalists after the meeting presided over by Governor Dr. Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Kanu, disclosed that the state government has reached advanced stages of engagement with the Nigerian Railway Corporation on plans to establish a new train station in Umuahia.
According to the Commissioner, the strategic discussions between both parties have yielded concrete progress, positioning the state for the takeoff of a modern rail system that will enhance mobility, ease transportation challenges, and open up new economic opportunities for residents and investors alike.
Providing further insight into the project, Prince Kanu explained that the proposed Umuahia train station will be sited adjacent to the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, forming a seamless intermodal transport hub designed to integrate rail and road transportation systems. He noted that the facility is being conceived as more than just a transit point, but as a comprehensive urban development corridor.
The project is expected to feature a modern railway infrastructure complemented by retail outlets and commercial spaces, creating a vibrant economic ecosystem around the station. This integration, he emphasized, is aimed at stimulating business activities, attracting private investment, and boosting the overall economic profile of the Umuahia axis.
In addition to the core railway infrastructure, the government has also outlined plans for the construction of a network of access roads that will connect the train station to surrounding communities. This road network is expected to significantly improve accessibility, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and ensure that the benefits of the project extend beyond the immediate vicinity of the station.
The development reflects the broader commitment of the Alex Otti-led administration to modernize infrastructure, promote urban renewal, and position Abia State as a key player in Nigeria’s evolving transportation
landscape.
