Abia Assembly Moves to Tackle Health Practitioners’ Leadership Crisis, Herdsmen-Farmland Conflict in Umuahia North
The Abia State House of Assembly has taken decisive steps towards addressing pressing concerns affecting community health practitioners and farmers in Umuahia North State Constituency following separate presentations by the member representing the constituency, Hon. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro.
During plenary, Hon. Akaliro presented a petition from the Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria over an ongoing leadership crisis threatening the stability and operations of the body. The petitioners called for urgent government intervention to restore order and ensure smooth administration within the association.
In response, the House directed its Committee on Health to thoroughly investigate the matter and provide necessary recommendations aimed at resolving the dispute and safeguarding the interests of healthcare practitioners across the state.
The lawmaker also raised a matter of urgent public importance bordering on the increasing destruction of farmlands by herdsmen allegedly operating in violation of the Abia State Anti-Grazing Law of 2018.
Hon. Akaliro drew the attention of the House to growing concerns from residents of Umuagu Autonomous Community and surrounding areas, where farmers are said to be suffering heavy losses as grazing activities continue to destroy cultivated lands and threaten livelihoods.
He warned that the situation, if not urgently addressed, could escalate into a breakdown of law and order within the affected communities, stressing the need for swift government action to protect farmers and enforce existing laws.
Following deliberations, the House committed the matter to its joint Committees on Security and Agriculture for further legislative action and possible recommendations aimed at restoring peace, protecting farmlands, and strengthening enforcement of the anti-grazing law across affected communities in Abia State.
