Enugu Community in Uproar as Woman Allegedly Takes Married Daughter for Pregnancy Termination Over Son-in-Law’s Financial Struggles
Tension has reportedly gripped the Ihunowere community in Nsukka, Enugu State, after a woman was allegedly apprehended by youths of the area for taking her married daughter to terminate a pregnancy following a family dispute linked to the economic condition of her son-in-law.
According to reports from the community, the woman’s daughter got married last year, but the marriage allegedly began facing challenges after the husband failed to present food items and gifts to his wife’s family during the Christmas and Easter celebrations, a gesture considered important in some local traditions.
Sources claimed the woman confronted her son-in-law over the issue, accusing him of neglecting family responsibilities. The man reportedly explained that he was battling serious financial difficulties and could not afford the items expected of him at the time.
The disagreement was said to have escalated afterward, leading the woman to allegedly invite her married daughter back to her parental home.
Reports further revealed that the daughter later returned home while pregnant, after which her mother allegedly arranged for the pregnancy to be terminated, a development that sparked outrage among members of the community.
The incident reportedly attracted the attention of local youths and community leaders, who moved to apprehend the woman over the allegation.
According to local media platform Tower FM Nsukka, the community subsequently ordered the woman to pay the sum of ₦1 million in damages to her son-in-law. She was also reportedly directed to perform traditional funeral rites for the unborn child in line with local customs and beliefs.
The development has continued to generate reactions within the community, with many residents expressing concern over the growing impact of economic hardship on marriages and family relationships.
