Alleged Power Transition Plot in Imo Sparks Fresh Debate Over Uzodinma’s Political Future and Akpabio’s Senate Presidency Battle
Fresh political calculations are reportedly unfolding within the corridors of power as new claims emerge over an alleged succession strategy involving Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, ahead of the 2027 political realignments and the battle for leadership of the National Assembly.
According to reports attributed to Premium Times, the alleged strategy revolves around a carefully coordinated transition plan designed to position Governor Uzodinma for a major national role while ensuring political continuity and protection for his loyal political structure in Imo State.
The reported arrangement suggests that the current deputy governor may voluntarily resign from office, paving the way for Governor Uzodinma to nominate and secure the confirmation of a new deputy governor believed to be his preferred political successor.
Under the alleged plan, Governor Uzodinma would later step down from office before the June Senate election, despite having several months remaining in his constitutionally guaranteed second tenure. The newly appointed deputy governor would automatically assume office as substantive governor of Imo State for the remainder of the administration.
Political observers believe such a move could strengthen the influence of Uzodinma’s political camp while also granting the incoming governor constitutional immunity during the remaining months in office, a situation commentators have compared to the political transition involving Ahmed Usman Ododo and former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello.
The reports further claim that Governor Uzodinma may be preparing to challenge Godswill Akpabio for the position of Senate President in the next National Assembly leadership contest.
Sources cited in the report alleged that Uzodinma’s ambition is receiving support from several influential figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress, including a bloc of APC governors and key personalities believed to be close to the Presidency.
The development has also intensified discussions surrounding recent alleged moves by Senator Akpabio to alter internal Senate rules ahead of the inauguration of a new Assembly leadership structure. Critics reportedly argue that the Senate President benefited from existing parliamentary procedures during the emergence of the current 10th Senate leadership in 2023 and should not seek to unilaterally reshape the process for future contests.
The claims have continued to generate reactions across political circles, especially among analysts monitoring the growing permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections and the struggle for dominance within the APC power structure.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Governor Uzodinma, Senator Akpabio, or the APC leadership regarding the alleged political arrangement.
