Gov. Alex Otti Flags-Off Construction of 1,000 Capacity Ecumenical Centre in Umuahia
The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has officially laid the foundation stone for the construction of a 1,000-capacity Ecumenical Centre in Umuagu Ibeku, Umuahia North Local Government Area, marking another significant milestone in the state government’s drive towards promoting unity, faith, and social cohesion among Christians across Abia State.
The colourful foundation laying ceremony drew dignitaries from different walks of life, including religious leaders, senior government officials, community stakeholders, and supporters of the administration. The event was performed with the assistance of Bishop Chikezie Elekwa and was attended by the governor’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti; Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, alongside top government functionaries.
The proposed Ecumenical Centre is expected to serve as a central worship and gathering facility for Christians in the state while also fostering harmony and collaboration among different Christian denominations.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Otti noted that the project had long been part of the vision of his administration and represented one of the promises made to the people upon assumption of office.
“Like I said earlier, this centre was one of the things we had vowed to do when we came into office.
“This land where we are standing was acquired in 2009 and has somehow remained waiting for this day,” he added.
The governor emphasized that the project goes beyond infrastructure, describing it as a symbol of spiritual unity, collective worship, and peaceful coexistence among believers irrespective of denominational affiliations.
Observers at the event described the project as a strategic development capable of strengthening interdenominational relationships and providing a befitting venue for major Christian gatherings, conferences, thanksgiving services, and other faith-based activities within the state.
Providing a detailed overview of the proposed structure, the contractor handling the project, Architect Onuka Ukwa, described the Ecumenical Centre as a modern and functional worship complex carefully designed to meet the needs of Christians across all denominations.
“The Ecumenical Centre is actually an ultra-modern building to house over 1,000 worshippers.
“It is designed to cater to all churches in the state, regardless of your denomination, whether you’re catholic, you’re anglican, you’re protestant, and all of that.
“So it’s a multi-purpose, very functional building and we hope to complete the building within 18 months from now,” he stated.
According to Architect Ukwa, the facility would not only provide a conducive environment for worship but would also stand as a landmark architectural project within the state capital area. He explained that the design incorporates modern features aimed at ensuring comfort, accessibility, and functionality for large gatherings.
Architect Ukwa also used the opportunity to appreciate Governor Otti for the confidence reposed in his team, assuring the government and people of Abia State of quality and timely delivery of the project.
“I would thank his excellency for the trust in us and we promise that we’ll deliver the project to his very high expectations,” he added.
The commencement of the Ecumenical Centre project has continued to generate reactions from residents and stakeholders who view it as part of the broader efforts of the Otti-led administration to promote infrastructural development, strengthen moral values, and encourage unity among the Christi
an community in Abia State.
