In a remarkable display of compassion and people-oriented leadership, the Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, commissioned and officially handed over 35 newly built Dignity Homes to indigent widows drawn from the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
The housing initiative, executed through the Office of the Wife of the Governor as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the administration of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, brought renewed hope and relief to widows who had long battled harsh living conditions and extreme hardship.
The commissioning ceremony took place at Umuhute, Ahiake Ndume, Umuahia, which served as the symbolic handover point for the entire project spread across the state.
Speaking during the event, Mrs. Otti expressed deep appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for his unwavering support towards programmes targeted at improving the lives of vulnerable citizens.
She also acknowledged the efforts of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Policies and Interventions, Dr. Christian Uche Anokwuru, for coordinating the project, alongside the Ministry of Women Affairs led by Dr. Mrs. Maureen Aghukwa, local contractors, and all individuals who contributed to the successful delivery of the homes.
She noted that providing decent shelter for widows goes beyond physical structures, describing a home as a source of dignity, stability, security, and restored hope for women who have endured years of suffering and neglect.
In addition to the housing support, the beneficiaries also received cash gifts and food items to assist with their immediate welfare needs, while plans for sustainable livelihood support are expected to follow in order to help them become financially stable and self-reliant.
The initiative has continued to attract commendations from residents and stakeholders across the state, with many describing it as another strong reflection of the compassionate and inclusive leadership style of the Otti-led administration.
Mrs. Otti reaffirmed the commitment of the present administration to continually expand social intervention programmes aimed at uplifting the vulnerable and improving the quality of life of ordinary Abians, while giving glory to God for the successful completion of the project.
Also present at the commissioning are Wife of the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Adaeze Chidera Emetu; the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Austin N
meregini, among others
