Abia State Assembly Summons Umuekea DPO, Justice Commissioner Over Alleged Police Brutality, Killing of Isiala Ngwa South Indigene
The Abia State House of Assembly has summoned the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Umuekea Police Station in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, alongside the Abia State Commissioner for Justice and the police officer allegedly involved in the killing of an indigene of the state, Mr. Abraham Okwukwe, as part of efforts to ensure justice and curb cases of police brutality.
The decision followed a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised during plenary by the member representing Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency, Hon. Dennis Roland Chinwendu.
Presenting the motion, Hon. Chinwendu expressed deep concern over what he described as the persistent cases of police brutality in his constituency, lamenting that the latest incident resulted in the death of one of his constituents.
According to the lawmaker, the tragic incident occurred on June 23, 2026, when Mr. Abraham Okwukwe allegedly died after being assaulted by officers of the Nigeria Police Force led by an officer identified as Sunny.
Describing the development as disturbing and unacceptable, Hon. Chinwendu urged the House to intervene to ensure justice for the deceased and to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents across Abia State.
Following deliberations, the House resolved to summon the Divisional Police Officer of Umuekea Police Station, the Abia State Commissioner for Justice, and Officer Sunny, who was alleged to have led the operation, to appear before the Assembly for questioning.
The lawmakers maintained that the move underscores the Assembly’s commitment to protecting the rights of citizens, promoting accountability among security agencies, and ensuring that those responsible for any abuse of power are brought to justice.
The Assembly also reiterated its determination to work towards ending police brutality in the state and strengthening public confidence in the justice system.
