President Tinubu Explains Rationale Behind Landmark NYSC Reforms, Says Youth Must Be Equipped for Nigeria’s Future
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has explained the rationale behind his administration’s approval of sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), describing the initiative as a bold step towards empowering Nigerian youths with practical skills and preparing them to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The President made the clarification in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Wednesday, following the approval of the reforms by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) during its meeting on Monday.
According to President Tinubu, the reforms represent one of the most significant overhauls of the NYSC scheme since its establishment in 1973 and are designed to reposition the programme to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving Nigeria.
He explained that the decision aligns with his administration’s commitment to creating opportunities for young Nigerians while ensuring that the NYSC remains relevant in addressing the country’s current socio-economic realities.
“On Monday, at the Federal Executive Council, our administration approved the most consequential reforms of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme since its establishment in 1973.
“On the day I was sworn in as your President, I promised to create meaningful opportunities for our young people.
“I said women and youth would feature prominently in our administration, and this reform is partly the actualisation of that promise,” Tinubu said.
President Tinubu noted that while the NYSC has played a vital role in promoting national unity and integration over the past five decades, changing national realities have made it necessary to reposition the scheme to better serve the aspirations of Nigerian youths.
He stressed that the reforms are intended to ensure corps members acquire practical skills that will enhance their employability, entrepreneurial capacity, and overall contribution to the nation’s growth and development.
Reaffirming the enduring importance of the NYSC’s original mandate, the President maintained that national unity would remain at the heart of the scheme even as it evolves to address contemporary challenges.
“For 53 years, the NYSC has served the cause of national unity. That mission remains important and must be preserved. But the Nigeria of today demands more,” he added.
The approved reforms are expected to reshape the NYSC into a more impactful platform for youth empowerment, skills acquisition, and national development, in line with the Federal Government’s broader vision of harnessing the potential of young Nigerians for sustainable economic growth.
