Abia Health Sector Records Remarkable Progress as 148 Primary Healthcare Centres Become Fully Functional
The Abia State Government has announced significant milestones in the health sector, highlighting remarkable improvements in healthcare delivery across the state following the Ministry of Health’s annual performance review and workshop.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Government House, Umuahia, while briefing pressmen on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex C. Otti, OFR.
According to the Commissioner, the annual review showcased the impressive strides made by the Ministry of Health in strengthening the state’s healthcare system through strategic investments and reforms aimed at ensuring that quality medical services are accessible to all Abians.
Prince Kanu listed the major achievements recorded by the Ministry to include the expansion of fully equipped and adequately staffed Primary Healthcare Centres and secondary health facilities, ongoing renovation and upgrade of health infrastructure, increased hospital utilisation, a significant reduction in maternal mortality, expansion of digital health initiatives, strengthened partnerships with global health organisations, and sustained growth in enrollment under the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme.
He noted that these accomplishments underscore the state’s unwavering commitment to transforming the health sector and improving the well-being of residents.
“These indicators reflect a health sector undergoing massive transformation and demonstrate the Governor’s unwavering commitment to providing accessible, quality healthcare for Abians,“ Prince Kanu stated.
Providing further updates on the government’s healthcare expansion programme, the Commissioner revealed that 148 Primary Healthcare Centres have already been fully functionalised across the state. He added that three additional centres are scheduled for functionalisation this week, while another 35 Primary Healthcare Centres are currently being equipped in preparation for their completion.
The continued expansion and modernisation of healthcare facilities, alongside the strengthening of health insurance coverage and digital health services, further reinforce the Alex Otti administration’s commitment to building a resilient, efficient and people-centred healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of 
every Abian.
