Abia State Govt Concludes Climate Change Policy, Targets Global Climate Funding and Stronger Environmental Protection
The Abia State Government has announced the completion of its long-awaited Climate Change Policy, marking a major step towards strengthening environmental sustainability and positioning the state to benefit from international climate financing.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, by the honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR.
According to the Commissioner, the policy document has been finalized and is currently awaiting the approval and official sign-off of Governor Alex Otti before it becomes operational.
Prince Kanu explained that the policy would serve as a comprehensive framework for addressing climate-related challenges across the state while enhancing Abia’s eligibility to access global climate funding and other international support initiatives.
“The Abia State Climate Change Policy Document is ready for sign-off by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State.
“As soon as the Governor signs off on that document and it becomes operational, the international community will begin to take Abia State more seriously in the state’s efforts to combat climate change, particularly with regards to opening up of several climate funding opportunities across sectors in the state,“ Prince Kanu stated.
He noted that beyond unlocking international funding opportunities, the policy is designed to provide practical solutions to some of the state’s pressing environmental concerns, including flooding, erosion, rising temperatures, climate-related health challenges and declining food security.
Prince Kanu emphasized that the implementation of the policy would not only strengthen Abia’s resilience to climate change but also promote sustainable development across critical sectors of the state’s economy.
“The implementation of the policy will reduce climate issues in Abia State, for example, in such areas as health, flood, erosion, heat waves, decline in food security, among others, while guaranteeing sustainability,“ the Commissioner added.
With the policy now awaiting the Governor’s approval, Abia is poised to join the growing number of sub-national governments with structured climate action frameworks aimed at attracting international partnerships, promoting environmental resilience and safeguarding the well-being of its citizens for gen
erations to come.
