Radio Icon “Diplomatic OPJ” Dies at 66 After Five-Year Battle With Partial Stroke
The Nigerian broadcast industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned radio journalist and media personality, Pius Opute Orezimena, popularly known as Diplomatic OPJ.
Mr Orezimena died at the age of 66 on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after a prolonged battle with a partial stroke that lasted for five years, bringing to an end the life and career of a broadcaster remembered by family, colleagues and listeners for his contributions to radio journalism.
The news of his passing was formally announced by members of his family in a statement issued on Wednesday. The family described his death as a painful and significant loss, while expressing gratitude for the memories, values and legacy he left behind.
“With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and family patriarch, Diplomatic OPJ (Pius Opute Orezimena Jnr.), who peacefully slept in the Lord on Tuesday, 25th August 2026,” the statement said.
The late broadcaster’s death has left his family grieving the loss of a man who occupied several important positions in their lives as a father, grandfather and family patriarch.
While mourning his passing, the family said they would continue to draw comfort from the life he lived and the enduring impact of the values he shared with those closest to him.
“His passing is a great loss to us, but we are comforted by the beautiful memories he leaves behind and the legacy of love, wisdom, and family that he shared with us,” it said.
Before his death, Diplomatic OPJ was a familiar voice in the Nigerian broadcast media space and worked with Wazobia 95.1 FM in Lagos State, where he built a reputation as a radio personality and journalist.
His passing marks the end of an era for listeners and colleagues who knew him through his years in broadcasting and his distinctive presence on radio.
Mr Orezimena is survived by his children, grandchildren and other extended family members, who are now mourning the loss while also celebrating the life and legacy he left behind.
“We humbly ask family, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers to remember us in their prayers during this difficult time,” the family said.
Details of his funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the 
family in due course.
