Yoruba Leader, Chief Akin Malaolu, Says Trump Appointment of Atiku’s Lobbyist, Dr. Karl Von Batten, Signals Political Access Ahead of 2027
A Yoruba leader, Chief Akin Malaolu, has claimed that the appointment of Karl Von Batten, managing partner of Washington-based lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York, by the United States government could be politically significant for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his 2027 presidential ambitions.
Malaolu, in a statement issued on Thursday, September 3, 2026, argued that the development suggests President Donald Trump may have a favourable disposition towards Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The development follows the appointment of Von Batten, who has been identified as a lobbyist for Atiku, as a commissioner of the White House Presidential Commission under the Trump administration.
Malaolu acknowledged that there is no established evidence directly linking Von Batten’s appointment to his relationship with Atiku. However, he maintained that the timing and circumstances surrounding the appointment could attract considerable political attention, particularly as Nigerian opposition figures and political parties prepare for the 2027 general elections.
“While there is no evidence that Trump’s appointment was made because of Von Batten’s relationship with Atiku, the coincidence is politically significant and demonstrates the level of access and institutional credibility surrounding the Washington-based lobbyist.
“For the opposition, the development is a reminder that Nigeria’s political contest ahead of 2027 is no longer confined to the domestic arena.
“The battle over Nigeria’s democratic credentials, economic direction, governance and international reputation is increasingly being fought in global policy centres, particularly Washington.“
According to Malaolu, the appointment has broader implications beyond the personalities involved, as international engagement and access to influential policy circles in Washington could increasingly become an important component of Nigeria’s political contest ahead of 2027.
Von Batten has in recent months been at the forefront of demands for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to release records relating to allegations surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and an alleged drug trafficking case.
His activities in Washington have consequently attracted attention within Nigeria’s political space, particularly among supporters and critics of the Tinubu administration.
The latest development is therefore likely to fuel further debate over the growing role of international lobbying, diplomatic access and foreign policy engagement in Nigeria’s domestic political affairs as the country moves closer to the 2027 presidential election.
Malaolu’s comments also place renewed focus on the activities of Nigerian political actors and their representatives abroad, particularly in Washington, where lobbying efforts can influence how issues concerning Nigeria’s democracy, governance, economy and political leadership are presented to policymakers and institutions.
While Von Batten’s appointment does not, by itself, establish any formal political endorsement of Atiku by President Trump, Malaolu believes the development is noteworthy and could become part of the wider political calculations surrounding the 2027 presidential race.
