Lagos Agbero Boss Oba Aro Leads Protest Against FBI, Demands End to Extradition of Nigerian Criminals
Controversial Lagos transport union figure, Oba Aro, has led a protest calling for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States to leave Nigeria and halt the extradition of Nigerian fraud (Yahoo Boys) suspects.
The protest, which drew attention in Lagos, featured demonstrators carrying placards opposing the presence and activities of the American law enforcement agency in the country.
The protesters demanded that the FBI should not establish or maintain an operational presence in Nigeria, while also objecting to the extradition of Nigerian suspects to the United States to face criminal charges.
The demonstration was anchored on the campaign slogan Say No To FBI Office in Nigeria, with protesters insisting that criminal suspects should be subjected to Nigeria’s judicial process rather than being transferred abroad.
Oba Aro’s involvement in the protest has further drawn public attention to the growing debate over international law-enforcement cooperation, extradition and the jurisdiction of foreign agencies operating in Nigeria.
The protest comes amid continuing concerns and controversies surrounding the activities of Nigerian nationals accused of financial crimes, cybercrime and other offences with international links.
While international cooperation between Nigerian and foreign law-enforcement agencies has been used to investigate and prosecute transnational crimes, the protesters are demanding greater emphasis on Nigeria’s sovereignty and domestic judicial processes.
