36-Year-Old Nigerian Man, Babatunde Odutola, Jailed 44 Weeks For Masturbating Infront Of A Woman On A Train In The U.K
A 36-year-old Nigerian man, Babatunde Odutola, has been sentenced to 44 weeks in prison after exposing himself and masturbating in front of a woman on a train travelling through Cheshire towards Manchester Piccadilly in the United Kingdom.
Odutola, who has no fixed address, was sentenced at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday, September 14, after pleading guilty to one count of outraging public decency and breaching a suspended sentence order. The sentence was handed down just three days after the incident.
The disturbing encounter occurred at about 7pm on Friday, September 11, when Odutola approached a woman who was travelling alone on the train.
According to the account presented to the court, he looked the woman up and down in an intimidating manner and became aggressive after she declined to engage with him.
Odutola subsequently exposed himself while seated in a wheelchair and masturbated while staring at the woman. He also invited her to come closer.
The woman became distressed, prompting another passenger to intervene and escort her away from the carriage.
CCTV footage later reviewed by investigators reportedly captured Odutola continuing the indecent act while other passengers moved through the carriage.
Police were alerted to the incident, and officers from the British Transport Police arrested Odutola after the train arrived at Manchester Piccadilly.
During his police interview, Odutola reportedly denied the allegations and showed little remorse for his actions. Investigators, however, relied on CCTV footage and accounts from several witnesses as evidence against him.
The evidence ultimately led to his guilty plea in court.
British Transport Police Detective Constable Leonidas Christoforou described the incident as particularly serious, noting that the woman had been singled out while travelling alone.
He said Odutola’s conduct would have been extremely distressing for the victim and stressed that such behaviour has no place on the railway network.
The case also revealed that the incident was not an isolated matter.
Odutola was already a registered sex offender when the train incident occurred. His latest conviction therefore resulted not only in the sentence for outraging public decency but also consequences for breaching an existing suspended sentence order.
British Transport Police said tackling offending on the railway remains a priority and that officers would continue to pursue cases involving passengers subjected to threatening, intimidating or sexually inappropriate behaviour.
The 44-week prison sentence means Odutola will now serve time in custody following the incident that left the woman distressed during her journey.
