Abia Set to Host 2026 “World Igbo Day” in September as Ndigbo Unite for Unity, Identity and Development
Abia State is set to host the 2026 edition of World Igbo Day on September 28 and 29, bringing together Ndigbo from across the country and beyond for two days of reflection, cultural celebration and renewed commitment to the development of Alaigbo.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, September 21, 2026, while briefing newsmen at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
The Commissioner said the 2026 World Igbo Day celebration would provide an important platform for Ndigbo to reflect on their unity of purpose, shared identity and collective contributions to the development of Alaigbo, while strengthening bonds among the people.
Themed “Njikọ Aka,” the two-day event will feature a rich blend of intellectual discourse, cultural activities, remembrance and religious observances designed to highlight the history, values and aspirations of the Igbo people.
Among the major activities lined up for the celebration is a keynote lecture on “Igbo Charter and the Development of Alaigbo,” which is expected to provide an avenue for critical discussions on the future of the South-East and the collective aspirations of its people.
The programme will also feature the laying of wreaths in honour of fallen Igbo heroes and heroines, providing an opportunity to remember and pay tribute to individuals who made significant sacrifices in the history and development of the Igbo nation.
Other activities include an interdenominational church service, a march-past by participating state delegations, traditional dances showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people, as well as speeches and goodwill messages from South-East Governors and other notable Igbo leaders expected at the event.
With Abia serving as host, the 2026 World Igbo Day is expected to draw significant participation from across the South-East and provide a major platform for cultural expression, dialogue and renewed conversations around the unity and developme
