Abia Police, INEC, Security Agencies Intensify Collaboration Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Abia State Police Command has intensified collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), sister security agencies and other key stakeholders to strengthen electoral security and ensure the peaceful conduct of the 2027 general elections.
The renewed commitment emerged on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, when the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, psc(+), mnips, JP, alongside the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Ifeanyi Ohuruzo, participated in a meeting of the Inter-Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) at the INEC State Office in Abia State.
The strategic engagement brought together heads of sister security agencies, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Abia State, and the State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), among other relevant stakeholders, to deliberate on security measures and operational strategies ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Central to the discussions was the need to identify potential security threats early, strengthen intelligence gathering, ensure the strategic deployment of security personnel and establish effective measures for protecting INEC officials and electoral materials throughout the electoral process.
Participants also examined the importance of providing adequate security at INEC offices and other critical locations to prevent disruptions and safeguard election-related activities before, during and after the polls.
Particular emphasis was placed on the effective implementation of the Inspector-General of Police’s directives on electoral security, with stakeholders underscoring the need for stronger inter-agency cooperation, seamless information sharing and sustained consultations to address emerging security challenges.
The meeting further highlighted the importance of conducting periodic security assessments to evaluate potential threats, improve operational preparedness and ensure that all relevant agencies remain coordinated in their approach to election security.
Stakeholders recognised that credible and peaceful elections require not only adequate security personnel but also effective coordination, timely intelligence, proactive threat management and a shared commitment among institutions responsible for protecting the democratic process.
The engagement therefore provided an important platform for security agencies and electoral stakeholders to harmonise their strategies, clarify operational responsibilities and strengthen the mechanisms required to respond effectively to potential security concerns.
For the Abia State Police Command, the consultations reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with sister security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to maintain law and order, protect electoral officials and materials, and prevent criminal elements from undermining the electoral process.
As preparations gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the strengthened collaboration is expected to contribute to improved security planning, enhanced operational readiness and a safer environment for voters, electoral officials and other participants.
The Abia State Police Command reiterated its resolve to sustain the collaborative approach, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in preserving peace, protecting democratic institutions and ensuring that the forthcoming elections are conducted in a peaceful and secure atmosphere.
