ABIA RECORDS PROGRESS ON ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE AS 51 DIRECT-LABOUR PROJECTS CONTINUE, THREE COMPLETED
The Abia State Government has recorded further progress in its road infrastructure development programme, with 51 direct-labour road projects ongoing across the state, three projects completed, and two additional roads included in the Ministry of Works’ maintenance programme.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at Government House, Umuahia, while briefing newsmen on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
The development underscores the state government’s sustained commitment to improving road connectivity, maintaining existing infrastructure, and delivering durable road networks that enhance economic activities and ease transportation for residents.
Among the recently completed projects are the internal roads at the Nigerian Navy College of Accounts and Finance, Owerrinta, which Governor Alex Otti commissioned on Monday; Green Avenues in Aba; and Road 4 in Area 5 of Agbama Housing Estate, Umuahia.
The completion of these projects represents another step in the administration’s efforts to improve road access within residential communities and public institutions while strengthening infrastructure across different parts of Abia State.
In a further boost to the maintenance programme, the government has added St. Vincent de Paul Road, Umuafai, in Umuahia North Local Government Area, and the 31.4-kilometre Obikabia–Isieketa Road to the list of roads receiving attention.
The Obikabia–Isieketa Road traverses Obingwa and Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas, making its maintenance particularly important for communities and road users across the affected areas.
Prince Kanu also disclosed that 24 roads were currently under contract across the state, with construction activities gathering momentum as the rainy season gradually subsides.
The increasing pace of construction is expected to support the delivery of ongoing projects and accelerate improvements in road infrastructure, particularly as weather conditions become more favourable for construction work.
One of the notable projects already delivered under the programme is the 12.6-kilometre Ohanze–Ntighauzor–Oberete–Umuohaoberte Akirikaobu Road, which connects communities in Obingwa and Ukwa East Local Government Areas.
The completion of the strategic road provides an important link between the benefiting communities and reflects the administration’s broader infrastructure agenda of improving accessibility beyond major urban centres.
With dozens of direct-labour projects ongoing, additional roads under contract, and new roads entering the maintenance programme, the Otti administration continues to pursue a coordinated approach to road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance across Abia State.
The government’s strategy combines the execution of new projects with the upkeep of existing roads, reinforcing its commitment to infrastructure development as a foundation for economic growth, improved mobility, and better living co
nditions for Ndi Abia.
