Abia Journalist, Iroegbu Emenike Says Orji Uzor Kalu ‘Will Play Himself Into Defeat’ Ahead of 2027
A prominent Abia North–born journalist and publisher of AFNews, Mr. Iroegbu Emenike, has weighed in on recent claims by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu that he would deliver Abia State to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the former governor’s political fortunes are waning and that defeat is imminent if basic electoral safeguards are observed.
In a strongly worded commentary circulating in political circles, Emenike argued that Senator Kalu’s greatest challenge lies not with his opponents but with his own conduct, which he described as consistently self-sabotaging.
“What I can confidently tell the people of Abia North who genuinely desire the retirement of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (OUK) is simple: OUK will largely play himself into defeat,” Emenike wrote.
According to the journalist, Kalu’s history of what he termed “flippant and careless statements” has repeatedly fueled public anger and strengthened opposition momentum against him. He maintained that such missteps would resurface in the build-up to the next election cycle.
Emenike further contended that unseating the senator would not be difficult if electoral integrity is upheld, stressing that transparent processes and strict vote protection, particularly at the Ohafia collation centre would be decisive.
Reviewing past election outcomes, he noted that Senator Kalu lost outright in Isuikwuato and Umunneochi during the last election and faced stiff resistance in Bende, Ohafia, and Arochukwu. He recalled that the contest was initially declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before a controversial reversal, adding that such a scenario, in his view, would not recur.
He also pointed to what he described as a changed political climate in Abia North, crediting Governor Alex Otti with delivering tangible governance outcomes that have reshaped voter alignment across the state.
“This election cycle is fundamentally different. Governor Alex Otti has delivered tangible governance to Abia North, just as he has across the state. Abians will naturally align with his political direction,” he stated.
Emenike suggested that any future political negotiations would place Senator Kalu at a disadvantage, asserting that the current administration holds significant leverage. He dismissed past strategies allegedly employed by the former governor, including the promotion of his younger brother’s governorship ambition, describing such tactics as “politically exhausted.”
Breaking down the local government dynamics, the AFNews publisher predicted losses for Kalu in Ohafia, Isuikwuato, Umunneochi, and Arochukwu LGAs, citing shifting loyalties, internal party discontent, and the growing influence of the governor’s supporters.
He concluded by warning that the only pathway for Senator Kalu’s survival would be the emergence of a weak opposition candidate lacking structure and grassroots appeal. Otherwise, he said, the outcome is already taking shape.
“With discipline, unity, and vote protection, OUK’s defeat is not a prediction, it is a process waiting to be completed,” Emenike declared.
The comments have added fresh intensity to the evolving political debate in Abia North as parties and stakeholders begin positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
