Abia Records Fresh Wave of Health Sector Accreditations, Covers All Four Nursing Campuses
Abia State has recorded a fresh wave of regulatory accreditations across its health and medical training institutions, with the development expected to further strengthen professional training and healthcare delivery across the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, while briefing pressmen on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Giving an update on developments in the health sector, Prince Kanu said Abia had recently secured several important regulatory approvals covering institutions and facilities across the state.
Prince Kanu also disclosed that Abia recently witnessed a harvest of regulatory accreditations in the health sector including the Nigerian Board for Technical Education for two campuses of Abia State College of Nursing Sciences (ASCON), completing the accreditation of all four campuses.
The latest development means that all four campuses of the Abia State College of Nursing Sciences have now completed the required accreditation process, marking a significant expansion in the state’s capacity to provide regulated professional nursing education.
Beyond nursing education, the Commissioner disclosed that additional healthcare facilities had received accreditation to provide specialised professional training.
According to him, the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria had accredited three hospitals in Abia for training purposes.
The accredited facilities are Aba General Hospital, Arochukwu General Hospital and Abia Specialist Hospital, Umuahia.
Prince Kanu noted that the three facilities are strategically located across the state’s three senatorial zones, giving the accreditation a statewide reach.
The development is expected to provide more opportunities for professional training within the state while strengthening the capacity of healthcare institutions to serve as centres for practical and specialised medical education.
With the completion of the accreditation of all four ASCON campuses and the approval of three hospitals for training by the relevant regulatory body, the Abia Government says the state is continuing to expand its health-sector infrastructure and professional training opportunities through regulatory compliance and instit
utional development.
