In a landmark move to modernise public transportation and ease financial pressures on residents, the Abia State Government has announced that subsidised fares for its Electric Bus Services will take effect from 1 March 2026. The initiative forms part of the State’s broader effort to provide a modern, transparent, and environmentally friendly public transport system.
Under the new fare structure, passengers travelling from Umuahia to Aba will pay ₦800, while commuters heading from Umuahia to Ohafia will be charged ₦1,000. This marks a transition from the initial rollout phase, which offered free rides to Abians since the introduction of the Electric Bus Service in December 2025. The free services were part of the government’s familiarisation programme designed to acquaint residents with the new transport system.
The Abia State Government has also revealed that the Electric Bus System will operate with a fully digital payment platform. Commuters will be required to make payments using ATM cards, a strategic move aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and a cashless public transport experience across the State.
Beyond transport, Governor Alex Otti used the occasion to highlight the administration’s key milestones across health, infrastructure, power, security, and economic development. Shortly after assuming office, the Governor declared states of emergency in strategic sectors to accelerate development, resulting in remarkable progress in several areas.
The reforms being implemented across critical sectors are part of the administration’s commitment to reshaping governance and improving service delivery in Abia State. By combining innovation, fiscal responsibility, and citizen-focused initiatives, the Governor aims to redefine the standard of public service in the region.
The subsidised Electric Bus initiative demonstrates the State Government’s resolve to create an efficient, affordable, and environmentally conscious transport system. By integrating technology and modern payment methods, Abia State positions itself as a model for urban mobility and progressive governance in Nigeria.
