Abia State Govt. Upgrades Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal as Green Shuttle Records Over 560,000 Passengers
The Abia State Government has commenced further improvement works at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia as part of efforts to preserve its modern standard and enhance its capacity to serve the growing number of commuters.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, September 7, 2026, while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of the week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti, OFR.
Prince Kanu said the ongoing intervention at the terminal included the expansion of its ticketing facilities to accommodate increasing passenger traffic and the installation of solar mini-grid carports designed to provide uninterrupted power supply around the facility.
According to the Commissioner, construction activities at the terminal had reached about 60 per cent completion, with the government targeting delivery before the end of 2026.
The upgrade is expected to further strengthen the terminal’s capacity while improving convenience, efficiency and the overall experience of commuters using the facility.
Meanwhile, the Abia Green Shuttle Bus Service has continued to attract significant patronage, with the subsidised transport scheme recording a total of 560,784 passengers since its launch.
Prince Kanu explained that 196,950 passengers benefited from the service between December 2025 and February 2026, during the period when the state government offered free rides.
Following the commercialisation of the service in March 2026, an additional 303,834 passengers used the Green Shuttle buses between March and the end of August.
The figures indicate sustained and growing demand for the state’s subsidised public transportation system, with residents and other commuters increasingly turning to the Green Shuttle service as an affordable means of movement.
