The 2nd Annual Committee of Heads of Bank Operations (CHBO) Stakeholders Conference and Dinner became a defining moment in Nigeria’s banking industry as Mr. Alex Alozie, former Executive Director and Group Chief Operating Officer of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, was honoured with an Award of Excellence in recognition of his outstanding contributions to banking operations and financial sector reforms.
The high-profile event, held at the prestigious Bankers’ House, Adeola Hopewell, Victoria Island, Lagos, focused on the theme Re-Imagining the Future of Cash in a Digital-First Economy. It brought together senior banking executives, operations professionals, regulators and industry stakeholders to examine how traditional cash management can be effectively balanced with accelerating digital innovation while sustaining operational efficiency and resilience.
Alex Alozie’s recognition stood out as a celebration of a career that has consistently shaped the operational backbone of Nigeria’s banking system. His contributions span some of the most critical reforms in the financial services sector, including the Bank Verification Number (BVN), e-mandate implementation, the cashless policy framework and cash-in-transit reforms. These initiatives have significantly strengthened transparency, efficiency, security and customer confidence across the banking industry.
Joining UBA in 2019 as Executive Director and Group Chief Operating Officer, Alozie was entrusted with driving the bank’s digital transformation and operational efficiency across its extensive African footprint. Prior to his appointment at UBA, he served as Head of Operations at Diamond Bank and Head of Digital and Head Office Operations at Access Bank, where he successfully led large-scale digital and process innovations that enhanced service delivery and institutional performance.
His leadership and technical expertise have earned widespread recognition from regulators and industry bodies. Among these are commendations from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for his contributions to the introduction of the cashless initiative, recognition by the Securities and Exchange Commission for his role in implementing the e-Dividend mandate, and the CBN/NIBSS Award for his membership of the BVN Implementation Committee.
Alex Alozie is a Fellow of several professional institutions, including the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, the Nigerian Institute of Management, the Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria, the Chartered Institute of Strategic Managers and Leaders, and the Association of Human Resources of Nigeria. He has also served on key national committees such as the CBN Committee on the Introduction of the Cashless Policy, the CBN/NIBSS Committee on BVN Implementation, the CBN/SEC Committee on E-Dividend Mandate and the CBN Committee on Shared Services.
The honour at the CHBO Conference came shortly after United Bank for Africa Plc announced the retirement of four Executive Directors, effective January 1, 2026, following the completion of their tenure. The retiring directors include Mr. Muyiwa Akinyemi, Deputy Managing Director; Mrs. Abiola Bawuah; Mr. Alex Alozie; and Mrs. Sola Yomi-Ajayi.
The conference dinner also provided a personal moment of celebration for Alex Alozie, who marked the recognition alongside his spouse, Mrs. Chinyere Alex Alozie. As he transitions from executive office, the award underscores a legacy defined by innovation, collaboration and enduring contributions to the evolution of Nigeria’s banking operations and the broader financial serv
ices ecosystem.
