ALGON, Abia Passes Unanimous Vote of Confidence on Gov. Otti as Aba North Mayor Timothy Kalu Iheke, Aba South Mayor Obialor Denis Anyanwu, Other Council Heads Back 2027 Re-Election Bid
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Abia State Chapter, has passed a unanimous vote of confidence on Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, citing what it described as demonstrable performance, visible governance outcomes, and a renewed synergy between the state government and the grassroots.
The position of the association was made public on Friday, January 16, during a press briefing at the Government House, Umuahia, where ALGON leaders, including the Mayor of Aba North, Hon. Timothy Kalu Iheke, the Mayor of Aba South, Hon. Obialor Denis Anyanwu, and chairmen of other local government councils, jointly aligned with the resolution endorsing the governor’s leadership and political future.
In a communiqué signed by the ALGON Chairman, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke, the association explained that the briefing became necessary in response to recent political meetings and statements by some actors attempting to question the tenure and future ambition of Governor Otti.
ALGON described such narratives as speculative, premature, and detached from the realities currently being experienced across Abia State.
While affirming the constitutional rights of citizens to freedom of expression and political association, the association stressed that democratic leadership is ultimately determined by performance and the freely expressed will of the electorate through credible elections, rather than by political conjectures, alignments, or elite pronouncements.
ALGON noted that since assuming office, Governor Otti’s administration has recorded verifiable improvements across all 17 local government areas, with visible progress in road infrastructure, healthcare delivery, educational facilities, prompt payment of salaries and pensions, clearance of inherited salary arrears, and prudent management of public resources.
According to the association, these achievements have directly impacted local communities and strengthened service delivery at the grassroots.
The council leaders further observed that Abia State has experienced a resurgence of public confidence and collective pride, both among residents within the state and Abians in the diaspora. This renewed optimism was attributed to restored trust in governance, institutional reforms, and the improved public image of the state after years of decline.
Describing ALGON as the custodian of grassroots governance, the association emphasized that its members remain in constant engagement with communities across the state. Through this daily interaction, they attested to growing public confidence in the direction of governance and the tangible benefits being felt by ordinary citizens in both urban and rural areas.
ALGON cautioned individuals and groups against attempts to pre-empt the democratic process or undermine ongoing development efforts through divisive political rhetoric. It urged political actors to engage more constructively by offering ideas, policies, and alternative visions capable of advancing development, unity, and stability in Abia State.
Reaffirming its institutional role, the association pledged continued support for policies and programmes that strengthen local government administration, deepen institutional development, and improve the overall quality of life for citizens across the state.
In a strong political declaration, ALGON collectively and unequivocally endorsed Governor Alex Otti for re-election in 2027, expressing appreciation for what it described as a robust, inclusive, and collaborative relationship between the state government and the local government councils under his leadership.
