Dolly Parton Laid to Rest in Private Family Funeral as Emotional Tributes Pour In
Country music icon Dolly Parton has been laid to rest following a private family funeral in Nashville, Tennessee, after her death earlier in the week at the age of 80.
The music legend was buried on Friday at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum, where she was laid to rest beside her late husband, Carl Dean. The private ceremony was attended by family members as tributes continued to pour in from fans, fellow musicians and admirers around the world.
Parton’s great-niece, Lainey Parton, shared an emotional tribute a day after the burial, describing the loss as difficult to comprehend.
“It still doesn’t feel real that she’s gone. I’m going to miss her voice, her laugh, her hugs, and just knowing she was there“
Lainey referred to the legendary singer as her “granny” and reflected on the special relationship they shared, particularly because Parton did not have children of her own.
“Because she couldn’t have kids of her own, she always made us feel like we were hers. She loved us that way, and I’ll forever be grateful for that.“
She also recalled how Parton encouraged her ambitions from childhood and helped her develop confidence in herself.
“From the time I was little, my granny always had a way of making me feel like I was enough.
“She never made my dreams feel too big or made me feel like I couldn’t do something. She believed in me before I even knew how to believe in myself.“
Lainey further revealed how Parton supported her journey through beauty school, emphasizing that her aunt’s support went far beyond words.
”She didn’t just tell me to chase my dreams, she helped me get there.“
In another emotional message, Lainey thanked people who had sent flowers, condolences and messages following Parton’s death.
“I feel incredibly lucky that I got to call her my granny.
“Thank you for always believing in me, loving me, and making me feel like I could do anything. I love you, Granny. Always,“ she added.
The burial came as cities across the United States continued to honour the country music giant. Candlelight vigils were held in several locations, including Seattle, while fans gathered to remember a performer whose influence stretched far beyond music.
An obituary published by Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum highlighted not only Parton’s extraordinary musical career and songwriting achievements but also the personal qualities that endeared her to generations of fans.

The tribute further described the scale of her impact across the entertainment industry and beyond.

The family has also requested that mourners who wish to honour Parton’s memory do so by supporting one of her most enduring charitable causes rather than sending flowers.
“In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.“
The Imagination Library, founded by Parton, provides free books to young children and became one of the clearest examples of how the singer transformed her personal success into a long-running philanthropic legacy.
Photos shared by Amelia Young, a reporter for Nashville’s NewsChannel 5, showed flowers and a book of condolence placed at Parton’s gravesite. The tomb features a brass plaque bearing the names of Parton and Dean, alongside engravings depicting their childhood homes.

While Parton’s funeral was private, the music world publicly celebrated her extraordinary life during a major tribute concert at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House on Saturday.
The venue, widely regarded as one of the most important homes of country music, became a gathering place for performers who came together to honour the singer’s immense contribution to the genre.
One of Parton’s nieces, Jada Star, performed during the tribute concert. She sang The Orchard, a song she recorded with her aunt in 2024 for the album Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith and Fables.
Ahead of the performance, Star acknowledged the emotional weight of the occasion.
“I am walking around in a fog of sadness, like all of you have. I do not take this honor lightly,“ Star posted before the performance alongside a broken heart emoji.
The tribute brought together several prominent names from country music, with Carly Pearce among those taking part.
Pearce’s connection to Parton stretches back years, having previously performed at Parton’s Dollywood theme park before establishing herself as a Grammy-winning country artist.
Country superstar Jelly Roll also made a surprise appearance during the finale, joining Pearce and other performers for a group rendition of Parton’s iconic song 9 to 5.
The emotional performance served as a reminder of the extraordinary catalogue Parton leaves behind, with her songs continuing to resonate across generations.

Tennessee’s governor has announced plans to name Nashville International Airport after the late singer, a move that would create a lasting public landmark honouring one of the state’s most recognisable figures.
In Britain, Parton’s music has also experienced a surge in popularity following her death. 9 to 5 was reportedly on course to reach number one on the UK singles chart after fans streamed the song in significant numbers in the aftermath of her passing.
However, its streaming figures have since begun to decline, leaving uncertainty over whether the classic will maintain its position when the final chart is announced on Friday.
Tributes have continued to arrive from artists who shared close personal and professional relationships with Parton. Miley Cyrus, Parton’s goddaughter, has also paid tribute to the music legend, describing her enduring presence in her life with the words “Angel by my Side.”
