FORMER ABIA LAWMAKER, OKEY IGWE, RESIGNS FROM PDP, SET TO JOIN ADC
A former member of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. (Barr.) Phillip Okey Igwe, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing what he described as the “inexorable disintegration” of the party.
In a resignation letter dated January 6, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Amuda Ward, Umu-Nneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, Igwe announced his decision to quit the party after what he said was careful monitoring of developments within its ranks.
According to the letter, the former lawmaker said he arrived at the decision after “patiently and closely” observing the state of the party and following due consultation with party leaders and supporters. He expressed appreciation to the PDP for the opportunity to serve and wished the party well in its future endeavours.
Hon. Igwe is a notable political figure in Abia State. He served as a member of the Abia State House of Assembly and was the running mate to the late Prof. Eleazar Uchenna Ikonne, the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections.
Meanwhile, reliable political sources have confirmed that Igwe is expected to pitch his tent with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the coming days, a move that could further reshape the political landscape in Umu-Nneochi and Abia State at large.
His resignation adds to the growing list of high-profile defections that have continued to challenge the PDP in the state ahead of future electoral contests.
