GOV ALEX OTTI SPEAKS TO ABIANS: GOVERNOR OTTI UNVEILS UNPRECEDENTED EDUCATION TRANSFORMATION WITH MASSIVE HOSTEL CONSTRUCTIONS, REVAMPED CAMPUSES AND EXPLOSIVE ENROLMENT GROWTH ACROSS ABIA
The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming the education sector through deliberate investments aimed at making education accessible, affordable, and attractive across all levels.
He said the administration has intensified efforts to make education accessible and affordable, noting ongoing reconstruction and renovation works at Abia State University, Abia State College of Education, Arochukwu, and facilities used by Abia Polytechnic.
Governor Otti made this assertion on Thursday at the Government House, Umuahia, during the January 2026 edition of “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” a monthly media interaction with journalists in the state.
Speaking on specific interventions in tertiary institutions, the Governor disclosed that:
“Construction is currently ongoing at the male and female hostels at the Abia State University, Uturu, while several renovated hostels have already been put into use.”
According to him, the massive infrastructure rehabilitation drive cuts across Abia State University, Uturu, Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, and Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, where major hostel construction projects are ongoing at their permanent sites to improve student accommodation and campus life.
Governor Otti explained that the improvements being witnessed in tertiary institutions are part of a broader strategy to restore confidence in public education and reverse years of neglect that had driven students away from government-owned schools.
In the area of basic education, the Governor described recent enrolment figures as historic, revealing that school enrolment has jumped from 170,000 to over 300,000 pupils as of the end of the previous month, calling the development a major milestone for the state.
He further revealed that enrolment in public schools has risen sharply following sustained reforms, adding that reports from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education indicate that enrolment has moved from about 117,000 a year ago to over 300,000 as at the end of last month.
To accommodate the unprecedented surge in student population, the Governor confirmed that the recruitment of additional 4,000 teachers is currently ongoing.
The Governor emphasized that the twin approach of infrastructure renewal and manpower expansion is designed to guarantee quality learning, reduce classroom congestion, and ensure that every Abia child has access to functional, safe, and well-equipped learning environments.
He assured Abians that education would remain a top priority of his administration, stressing that a well-educated population is central to the state’s economic growth, social stability, and long-term development.
Observers say the sweeping reforms in Abia’s education sector underscore Governor Otti’s broader vision of building a new Abia where public institutions work efficiently, citizens regain trust in government services, and opportunities are equitably distributed across the state.
